Dave O’Neil

No one can accuse popular Melbourne comedian Dave O’Neil of not suffering for his art, or a laugh for that matter.

Early in 2010, Dave shattered his left leg in 22 places leg during a breakfast radio stunt in which he jumped his co-host, Ian Dicko Dickson, on a bmx bike.

A week in hospital and month of rehab followed and Dave was forced to pull out of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

In 1999 he spent six weeks in bed after falling off a stage at a gig and cracking a vertebra but back then he didn’t have three young children to provide for so it didn’t cause the quite the same upheaval as the bmx stunt.

Getting sacked from his PR job more than twenty years ago gave the former Mitcham boy the impetus to finally pursue his dream of being paid to be funny.

His career kicked off at Melbourne comedy institution Le Joke where his first gig went well.

Radio beckoned with his first breakfast gig at Melbourne’s cult community station 3RRR where he hooked up with Kate Langbroek.

It wasn’t long before the commercial stations came knocking and Dave joined Langbroek and Dave Hughes as Melbourne’s breakfast team when the Nova network was launched in 2001.

He was also working extensively as a comedy writer for many TV shows including The Eric Bana Show and went on to appear with Bana in the Aussie feature film The Nugget.

Since finishing up on breakfast radio last year Dave has criss crossed the country performing his sell out comedy festival show Happy To Be Out Of The House.

Wherever there’s a TV panel show you’ll find Dave O’Neil. He’s appeared on the ABC’s Spicks and Specks more times than any other guest thanks largely to his sharp wit and love of music trivia.

Dave actually has his own place in Australia’s music history having played keyboards on Countdown with his band Captain Cocoa.

Music fell by the wayside when comedy beckoned and anyone who loves a good laugh should be grateful that it did.

If you’re looking to hire a comedian for your next event, Dave O’Neil, would be the perfect addition to your entertainment plans.
